B6: OPERATIONS (Editorial)
In Lesson B5 we focused on the organisational pillar of business operations and in this lesson we will look at editorial operations: again with a focus on processes and systems.
Editorial is usually targeted when it comes to operational efficiencies: Editorial costs – especially payroll – are almost always a big focus in news organisations because they are usually one of the largest cost bases and are difficult to control.
Unfortunately, lax management often means that neither costs or productivity are given enough attention – and this lesson focuses on productivity exercises as a way to understand whether you are getting value for your spend.
We also include some example job descriptions and key performance indicators for you to use as a blueprint for your own management purposes.
Finally this lesson includes a number of principles to follow for digital first working in your own newsrooms, which we hope will be helpful to you.
