B5: OPERATIONS (Commercial)
In this lesson we examine the commercial operations in a business. Everything that happens within a company to keep it running and earning money is referred to as business operations. This might not really be the most exciting part of business, but it is one of the most important.
The support structures in a media business such as HR, finance, circulation and advertising, can make it or break it as a success or a failure, and these areas all have to run very well indeed and very efficiently to support an organisation that is going through change, specifically, as we all are.
A definition of operations management is concerned with converting materials and labour into goods and services as efficiently as possible. So when we think about a news organisation, this will cover the act of converting news gathering (labour) into content that in turn is made into newspapers, websites, TV broadcasts, videos, podcasts and radio channels. These are the goods and services that are then monetised for profit.
In the next session, we will cover editorial operations as a separate operational area in the business.
